Use this checklist to gather the information a Power of Attorney usually depends on before drafting begins. Working through it first tends to reduce repeated signatures, translations and authority visits later.

1. The parties

  • Full legal name of the principal, exactly as it appears on the passport or Emirates ID
  • Full legal name of the attorney or attorneys being appointed
  • Nationality, identity document numbers and contact details for each party
  • Whether more than one attorney may act, and whether they act jointly or separately
  • For a company principal: trade licence, constitutional documents and evidence of signing authority

2. The powers being granted

  • The specific transaction or matter the attorney must be able to complete
  • Whether the authority is general or limited to a defined purpose
  • Any acts to be expressly excluded
  • Whether the attorney may appoint a substitute
  • Any intended duration, expiry or revocation arrangements

3. The transaction

  • The asset, company, account, case or property concerned
  • Supporting records such as a title deed, sale document, developer record, share register or case reference
  • The organisation that will rely on the document, since its requirements shape the wording

4. Where it will be signed

  • Whether the principal will sign inside the UAE or abroad
  • If abroad, the country of execution and whether authentication or consular steps may be needed
  • Whether an electronic channel may be available for the particular service
  • Whether certified legal translation is likely to be required

5. Supporting records to have ready

  • Passport and Emirates ID, where applicable
  • Trade licence, memorandum or articles and ownership records for a company
  • Board or shareholder resolutions evidencing authority
  • Any existing draft POA or earlier POA to be revoked
  • Foreign documents together with evidence of authentication

Do not sign, legalise or translate a document solely on the basis of this list. A Power of Attorney does not itself transfer ownership of property.
